A Brief History of Nenana

Nenana get it's name from the Athabascan language, it means "a good place to camp between rivers." Before the 1900's, the native Athabascan's settled  on what would become the townsite of Nenana. By 1916, non-native settlers had found the site to be inviting and had the area surveyed and lots sold for auction.

A year later, spring of 1917, the official start of our now century long tradition of the Nenana Ice Classic began. On November 17th, 1921, Nenana incorporated as a city and through trial and tribulation, floods, fires, and pandemics, the city celebrated it's 100th birthday on November 17th, 2021.
